In baby blankets, you should make sure to search for softness and comfort, but also durability - you certainly don’t want your baby blanket to get torn or fade out after the first few washes!
Baby blankets are usually in the square form, and this is so for a reason - square blankets make it much easier to swaddle your little one.
Baby blankets can also provide great (and clean!) cover for diaper changes and tummy time, but also give you the privacy and comfort of a lightweight nursing cover.
It’s recommended that you should look for baby blankets for newborns made from a material or fabric that’s going to make the swaddle wrapping easier, which means a softer material. This means that cotton muslin provides better material for swaddling than blankets made from fleece.
In fact, fleece can sometimes make the baby feel too hot, which means you should avoid (or at least be careful) using them in cars or strollers, so you don’t cause overheating.
Breathable cotton that’s soft and easy to wash is also a great option for a baby blanket since it’s much less likely to irritate your baby’s sensitive skin.
There are several types of baby blankets according to size:
Receiving blankets - range from sizes 18-inch square to a 36-inch square
Crib blankets - usually 40 inches by 60 inches in size
Swaddle blankets - approximate size ranges from 40x40 to 48x48
Multi-use blankets - usually 30 to 40 inches
It all depends on what you want to use the baby blanket for. Sometimes it’s good to have several types of them at home for different purposes. Or, if you want to save up on money and space a little bit, then it would be a good idea to get the multi-use or multi-purpose baby blankets.
When it comes to covering a baby (different from swaddling), you should wait till your little one gets to at least 12 months of age. This is the recommended age by the AAP- the American Academy of Pediatrics - who warns that the crib’s soft bedding (pillows and blankets) can pose a high risk of suffocation (aka SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). You can use safe alternatives to baby blankets like sleep sacks, sleepers, and wearable blankets.
Once your little one passes the threshold of 12 months, the risk of SIDS and suffocation decreases significantly. This is so because most babies at that age are already able to roll over if something is pressing on their face or head too much, and also are dexterous enough to move the blanket away from them.
This is a definitive no. You should definitely not use a combination of a sleeping bag and a baby blanket. Sleeping bags for babies are meant to be used only by themselves, without any extra coverings on them. This is to protect them from overheating and potential suffocation. If you want your baby to get extra warm, we recommend that you layer them up by putting on thicker pajamas, a baby vest or a onesie.
This is a possibility if you’re not careful about the age of the baby and the way the blanket is being used.
For babies that are under 12 months of age, blankets shouldn’t be used to cover them at night, as to not increase the risk of SIDS or suffocation. Instead, keep the room at a comfortable temperature - around 70-72 degrees Fahrenheit) and dress them in nighttime clothing, baby pajamas or onesies. Also, keep in mind not to overdress them - just use one extra layer than you would usually wear, and make sure the fabrics are soft and breathable, preferably cotton-made. They shouldn’t be too tight or too loose but should be able to fit them snugly.
There are four main types of baby blankets: swaddle blankets, receiving blankets, crib blankets, and multi-use blankets.
Swaddle blankets are used for precisely what their names say they are: swaddling. Swaddling, an age-old practice (for which you can read more in detail here) is recommended to this day by pediatricians as a natural remedy for a crying baby. Wrapping the baby tightly in a comfy blanket can sometimes soothe even the fussiest of babies. When looking for a swaddle blanket look for lightweight, thin material, such as cotton muslin. They come in different sizes and are meant for babies of various sizes. They usually range from 40x40 to 48x48 in size. The best is to measure it according to your baby, though, and see if you’ve got enough material to make the perfect swaddle wrap.
Receiving blankets are blankets made from a thin material, sold in packs of two and four, and are used for different occasions in the early months of babies. Their size is usually smaller than the standard swaddling blanket, usually ranging from 18 square inches to 36
Crib blankets are to be used after your baby gets above the threshold of 12 months of age. These are blankets that are meant to cover the little one in the nighttime. They usually come in the form of a rectangle and are about 40x60 inches big, which means it’ll fully cover the toddler sleeping in the crib or bed. Have in mind that this blanket should have no loose buttons, threads yarns and large holes which can pose a risk for the baby.
Multi-use blankets are blankets meant for a couple of different occasions and uses at the same time. This means that they can be used for travel, as stroller blankets, car seat covers, but also as activity blankets. Activity blankets, usually thicker, are a great, soft and clean surface where you’re little one can safely crawl and play. They usually come around 30-40 inches in size.
Regardless of whether you’re going to use them only through the day (till your little one gets 1 year old!), or once they become a tad older, use them also as covers for the night - baby blankets are a must-have item once you become a new parent!
Choosing one is not easy, though, since there are so many varieties, sizes, and brands on the market right now. When you look for a baby blanket, it’s best to look first for the type of material, but also the weight of the blanket and the way it’s designed. You should also have in mind how you want to use this blanket for your little one. Some parents opt for using a couple of different types of blankets for different occasions throughout the day - like, for example, a fleece blanket would be more useful for a walk outside in the pram in colder weather, rather than to be used in the inside of the house. Babies can’t regulate their own temperature, so all the tasks fall on you to do it for them!
The reason why we opted to make this guide and select the best baby blankets you can currently find is to save you a little bit of time and energy in the process of choosing among the countless baby blankets out there! We hope this guide was helpful enough and that both you and your baby will enjoy the new, comfy blanket from our list!
