If you want your baby to have healthy, soft and glowing skin, it’s important to moisturize it regularly. One of the best ways to moisturize your little one’s sensitive skin is by using a baby lotion. The best time for using a baby lotion is after the baby receives its bath, since the best way to apply the baby lotion is on slightly damp skin.
Skin differs from baby to baby, so it’s always important to have the special conditions of your little one’s skin when searching for baby lotion. There are several key points you need to keep in mind when purchasing a baby lotion:
Be mindful of the baby’s skin type - as we mentioned earlier, as each baby is different, so do skin types differ from baby to baby. That’s why it’s so important to find a baby lotion (a moisturizer) that will suit the particularities of your baby’s skin best. For example, if you find that your little one has super-sensitive skin, it would be a good idea to search for a lotion that contains a formula meant for extra-sensitive baby skin. Or, if you find that your baby frequently develops rashes, then you should search particularly for a lotion with a hypoallergenic formula and as many natural ingredients as possible, in order to prevent further bouts of rash.
Search for lotions made specifically for babies - lotions are used by everyone, big and small, and it’s quite easy to mislead yourself and think that lotions used by adults will also be appropriate for babies. But, the matter is a bit more complicated than that. Similarly to soaps and other types of washes, lotions that work well for adults, may not at all be suitable for children, especially babies, whose skin is still in development and is highly sensitive. That’s why it’s advisable to choose lotions specifically made for babies and baby skin because they’re designed especially for the needs and convenience of the baby’s skin - such as more natural ingredients, as well as hypoallergenic formulas.
Opt for unscented baby lotions - quite often manufacturers use the label ‘perfume’, ‘scent’ or ‘fragrance’ as an umbrella term for various shady or problematic ingredients and substances that may be harmful or act as irritants on your baby’s skin. That’s why, in order to be on the safe side, it’s a good idea to choose and search for baby lotions that are unscented and that don’t contain this label. Also, some babies are really bothered by certain added, strong smells from baby skin products, so that’s another reason why you should avoid them!
For a lot of people out there, especially parents who are worried about what they put on their child’s skin, labels can seem confusing and downright intimidating. Which is why it’s always a good idea to have a small guide in hand, so next time you check that list of product contents, you’ll know what you’re up against!
So, this is the not-so-friendly bunch you should look out for in baby lotions - aka ingredients you need to avoid:
Paraben - this is a preservative used quite often in skin care products and the cosmetics industry; its role is to prevent the growth of fungus and bacteria. The problem with paraben is that it’s highly likely to be carcinogenic. This means that you should avoid baby products in general that have paraben listed in their content information.
Phthalates (also: standor Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)) - these chemicals are used as stabilizers and lubricants in cosmetic/skin care products, and can also be present in some baby lotions. Although research concerning the effects of phthalates on humans is limited, it’s suspected that they may affect the reproductive system. When going through the ingredient list, a way to make sure the baby product you want to buy is free from phthalates, is to look out for chemicals that are named Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (BEHP).
Methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone - these are two chemicals which are also used as preservatives in cosmetics and similar such products. These intimidating buggers with huge names are known to cause allergies, especially in people with extra-sensitive skin. And this just means that they really shouldn’t belong on a baby’s skin. You can easily spot them on baby lotion labels with the same names mentioned above.
Sodium laureth sulphate - this is a chemical which makes the skin and hair care product frothy and foamy, which means it’s often present in soaps, washes and sometimes also lotions. It’s known to irritate the skin, especially in babies. It can also affect the balance of the natural oils produced by the skin itself. In product labels, you can usually find this chemical with the ending sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) and sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES).
Propylene glycol - chemical added to cosmetic products that are supposed to enhance the product’s moisturizing capabilities, but also to make them (more) fragrant. This one is also a known skin irritant, and when used long term, it’s been proven to be even mildly toxic. When reading skin care and baby lotion labels, to locate this chemical look for names such as 1,2-propanediol, propylene glycol, methyl ethyl glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol.
Manufacturers of baby lotions are becoming more and more wary of using these kinds of substances in their products, but it’s still important to know them and always be prepared when they’re going to try and maybe slip some of them under the door. You definitely don’t any of these chemical buggers ending up on your baby’s skin (and potentially in their bloodstream as well!).
Not all newborns need a baby lotion, but a lot of them often have dry skin, which means that at some point you will have to use it on them. The skin of some babies gets particularly dry in some spots, and can even split - these are usually the parts of the ankles and also the hands. For newborns, use mild lotions that don’t contain perfume/scent/fragrance, and also look for ones with as many natural and organic ingredients as possible.
As we’ve seen (and read) so far, choosing the right baby product is no easy task - it seems to require whole mini expertise! But, luckily, it’s not as complicated as it seems. It’s only that the beginnings are a little bit tough (talk about being a newbie parent!), but after a little while, everything gets a lot easier.
Baby lotions are great ways to moisturize your little one’s body. Apply them after each bath, with clean hands, and always check your little one for potential allergies. If this is the case, then change the product as soon as possible. If you have any more serious doubts about baby lotions, you can always consult with a pediatrician.
We hope that with this guide, and similar like it on our website, we’ve also made it easier for you to choose among a bunch of baby products. The well-being of babies is our priority number one and we always try to select products that are the best in their domains and that won’t fail any baby or parent that chooses to use them on their little one.
